Installing.deb-files in a straight way: how do I know if it's correct?
I always install from.deb-files, I really like the simplicity and the software installation is usually done in a few seconds.
Here is an example of a Deb file:
The package description is short and the package seems to work.
But, how can I be sure that the installation process is done successfully?
A:
With software installed from a DEB file, it is the author's responsibility to make sure the installation succeeds. If they do not, the user has no recourse. If you are not willing to take responsibility for the installation then you should stay away from DEB files.
Installing from a DEB file is easier, because you do not have to read package descriptions or search the Web for installation instructions. With a package manager, a DEB file is just a.tar.gz archive or a.tar.bz2. Both of these are simply archives that contain the Debian packages. The packages are not self-contained. Debian packages are not Debian binaries. They are just archives with the Debian binaries.
If you do not want to maintain your own packages, you should not use DEB files. Instead, you should use the apt command-line tool and dpkg. There is no other reason for you to use DEB files.
